Cochrane Street 1846
02-06-2010
Across the road from our gallery is Cochrane Street. It was partially built by 1846 as a row of terraced houses stepping up the hill.
The earliest view of Cochrane Street and Lyndhurst Terrace was drawn by Murdoch Bruce in 1846. In the foreground are flagstones for building roads, which were probably used for the steps in Pottinger Street. Local people are watching as soldiers wearing bearskins and with fixed bayonets are marching around the open area between the three roads. In the distance to the right the harbour can be seen at the end of Wellington Street. To the left is the old Union Church just above Hollywood Road.
Cochrane Street can be seen in the middle distance. It now has an escalator running the length of it from Queen's Road to Hollywood Road. Riding the longest escalator in the world is a must for visitors to Hong Kong.
