Description:

Signed lower right W. Fred Mitchell. HMS Imperieuse was an armoured cruiser of 8,500 tons and was one of the largest Royal Navy ships to visit Hong Kong in the nineteenth century. She was built in 1886 and her designed speed was 17 knots. She first appeared in Hong Kong harbour in 1889 and became the flagship in China the same year. She was the flagship in the Pacific in 1896. Her armament was four 9 inch calibre guns and ten 6inch calibre guns

 

The English maritime artist William Frederick Mitchell [1845 - 1914) was born in Calshot Castle, Hampshire, in 1845. According to Huon Mallalieu in his "Dictionary of Britsh watercolour artists up to 1920" he was, " a painter of competent ship portraits who can occasionally be very good indeed. He worked in Portsmouth and did many commissions for naval officers.
