China Veteribus Sinarum Regio nunc Incolis Tame dicta

Date:

1635

copper engraving, original colour

Size:

41 x 49.8 cms.

Description:

A fine and beautiful early map of China in bright original colours. It also shows Korea as an island, Japan, Formosa and Northern Luzon of the Philippine Islands. The lower cartouche is the coat of arms of Theodore Bas, a director of the Dutch East India Company, to whom the map is dedicated.

The Island of Formosa appears more accurately depicted than the earlier maps of China by Ortelius and Hondius. The map was based on information provided by the Jesuits.
