South East Asia - Insulae Indiae Orientalis

Date:

1631

Medium:

copper engraving

14.5 x 19.5 cm

Description:

The title, Insulae Indiae Orientalis, appears in a cartouche at the top of the map. At the head of the page the title appears in German, DIE INDIANISCHE INSVLEN. Signed in the plate bottom left, P. Kaerius Calavit. Petrus Kaerius was the Latinised form of Peter Van Den Keere.

An attractive map of the islands of South East Asia engraved in Amsterdam at the beginning of the seventeenth century.

There are four worm holes, two inside the margin and two inside the border. Otherwise a good strong impression.

The Dutch cartographer and engraver, Pieter van den Keere, produced a number of maps together with his brother-in-law Jodocus Hondius. German text verso.
