L'Asie divisee en toutes ses grandes Regions Royaumes et Etats ...

This map was first published in 1690 when the title cartouche attributes the origin of the map to Vincenzo Coronelli, the great Venetian cosmographer and cartographer. The title cartouche on this map mentions Sr de Tillemont and dedicates it to the Jesuit father Francois de la Chaise who was Confessor to the King.

Vincenzo Coronelli worked in Paris in the 1680s  with the talented engraver Jean Baptiste Nolin. Together they produced a pair of the most magnificent globes ever made for the Sun King, Louis XIV. They were completed in1683 and are 4 metres in diameter They still survive in all their splendour and it is well worth a journey to visit them in Bibliotheque National Francois Mitterand in Paris.

The map itself is based on Coronelli's two sheet map of Asia. It is a beautifully engraved map although by 1704 it was still showing little detail of north east Asia that had recently been improved.

Despite being honoured with the title "Geographer to the King", J.B. Nolin was really an artist engraver. In the early eighteenth century he was caught up in a scandal. In 1700 he was prosecuted by the geographer, Guillaume De L'Isle for plagiarism. Six years later he was found guilty. It was a time when geographers and publishers were copying each other regularly.

This beautiful map shows the skill of one of the great map engravers from France.
